ARTIST BIO

Nadjiwan is the long-running musical project of Toronto/Thunder Bay–based singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer Marc Meriläinen, a member of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation, Cape Croker. For over three decades, Nadjiwan has blended alternative rock with Indigenous storytelling, creating music rooted in lived experience, cultural memory, and forward momentum. In 2024, Nadjiwan marked the project’s 30th anniversary with the release of The Mission, recorded in a century-old church on the Mescalero Apache Reservation in New Mexico. The album’s lead single, “Not Undone,” draws directly from Meriläinen’s mother’s residential school experiences, pairing raw, emotionally charged songwriting with layered guitars and expansive arrangements. The record reflects a mature, powerful sound shaped by place, history, and resilience. Continuing this creative resurgence, Nadjiwan’s 2025 release Now Is The Right Time Of Year expands the project’s sonic and thematic range. Songs move seamlessly from driving rock anthems like “The Kids Like To Rock” to reflective and ceremonial works such as “Sacred Fire” and “Breaking The Dawn,” which speaks to Indigenous resurgence and renewal. Through these recent releases, Nadjiwan continues to honor ancestral narratives while pushing rock music forward—creating work that is urgent, grounded, and deeply resonant across generations.
